Taking Online Mathematics & Physics Courses

Mathematics and Physics courses taught online require students to have certain skills and software to be successful. Students who wish to take a math or physics course online must complete a Petition. The Petition is a process administered through the Math & Physics Department that helps students determine if they have the skills to be successful in the online environment. Steps of the Petition also verify that the student's computer has the software required for math and physics classes at Wake Tech. Through this series of steps, students will demonstrate that they have the basic skills of:

  • Communicating by e-mail
  • Downloading documents
  • Attaching a document to e-mail and sending it
  • Working in Word and Excel

By completing all the steps in the Petition, students will be able to determine if their computer has the required software - Microsoft Office Equation Editor and Excel. The Petition process informs students that online courses require a greater time commitment than seated classes. Students who plan to take an online course should be prepared to devote at least 3 hours per week for every credit hour of the course. Example: MAT 151 Statistics, 4 Cr = 12 hours per week of study and online participation.

Note: The Petition does not guarantee a space in an online class; however, students need an approved Petition in order to be prepared to register.
